Couscous - Home Economics

Couscous
Last Friday our home economics class made Couscous.

Image result for couscous saladMy group were assigned tasks Jakita was making the couscous, Jimmy was preparing the salad, Ella and I were making the salad dressing. By assigning the tasks this made everything organised and were able to focus on our jobs. The class surprisingly finished on time with 5 minutes to spare.

Miss Hindson gave us a pita bread which we cut into quarters and served with the couscous.  I really liked couscous served with the salad it was refreshing however we did put in extra oil which didn't ruin the dish but just made it a bit oily. But my friends enjoyed it and loved the addition of the pita bread. My group members had the same comments about the dish.

What did the group do well?

The group was very organised and focused. They stayed on task and got their jobs done and had time to help others within my group. This weeks time management was really good because as stated above we have 5 minutes to spare and talk about the dish.

What could we improve on?
Not much because this weeks lesson was very productive but maybe cleaning up every time we cut something and wiping the benches.

Next Steps:
1. Wiping the benches.
2. Cleaning up when we cut something
3. Doing things quicker.

Butter Chicken - Home Economics

Butter Chicken
Image result for butter chicken and rice

On Friday the 25th of October our Home Economics class made Butter Chicken.

My group were assigned tasks and because we didn't have a full team we had to work even harder to get finished on time. My job was to make the butter chicken sauce but earlier in the lesson, I had not cut my chicken to a reasonable size which meant I had to leave the sauce on for longer so the chicken was cooked. Everyone in my group did a good job and I don't know how but we got out on time.

I did not taste the butter chicken but I had got some feedback from my friends and group members. They liked the chicken but thought the sauce did not have enough flavour and wanted a bit more spices. My group member had basically the same comment and for next time we cook this dish we know to add more spices into the sauce.

What did the group do well?
The group was focused and everyone knew what they had to do. This meant no one was standing around doing nothing. They did their jobs quickly because we didn't have an extra member. All the members contributed and we were able to finish on time.

What could we improve on?
I think we could improve on communication because during that class, even though everyone was doing their own thing this meant we were not able to communicate on what we had to do next or who's doing what. It was a messy lesson.

Next steps?
As stated above we may need to improve on our communication among the team.

I was not here on Friday the 1st Of November, which means I can not write a blogpost on the dish we made.

Meat Free Pasta - Home Economics

Meat Free Pasta

Last Friday our group made meat-free pasta with tomato sauce.

My group were assigned tasks in the lesson. I was in charge of cooking the pasta sauce and drying and washing the dishes. While the other group members were left to cook the pasta and prepare everything. Miss Hindson gave us the challenge to present like they do on Masterchef, we accepted it. Getting into the lesson everyone knew what they had to do due to the time frame. This was a simple vegetarian dish however it took us a bit longer to complete it. But, we were able to finish the dish on time.

The pasta was really tasty, the pasta was cooked al dente. However, I thought the pasta sauce was a little salty. I loved the sprinkle of cheese on top because the heat from the pasta and pasta sauce caused it to melt and create a delicious crust. This was not a huge problem but as you ate it over and over again it started to overpower the dish. Apart from that, I would love to make this dish again and add a little twist of my own.

What did the group do well?
The group was really focused and had good time management skills. Everyone knew what they were supposed to do which meant no one was standing around finding something to do or slacking off. Everyone stayed on track even though we didn't have a physical recipe to follow. This meant we had to listen to Ms Hindson and try to remember what she said. All and all everyone did a great job and we were able to produce a delicious dish.

What could we improve on?
Nothing much because the group was focused and the time management skills were good as well. Maybe next time we could wash the dishes and dry them a bit quicker.

Feedback?
Feedback from the group was really positive and everyone enjoyed the dish. They loved the choice of pasta we chose which was the spiral pasta. We didn't choose the spaghetti pasta because a majority of the class chose it and the spirals looked more pleasing.

Next Steps:
Our next steps include:
- Taking more photo's.

🇯🇵 Japan 🇯🇵

Japan
This home economics lesson we learned about Japan and their culture.
I learnt:
In a traditional tea ceremony ladies were the only one to serve the tea.
That soy sauce is fermented and the difference between dark and light is how long it has been fermented for.
That the Japanese take pride in their lunch boxes and usually spend 10 minutes preparing one.

Questions?
What rice do the Japanese use for their sushi rolls?
How many types of rice are there? Name Them.
Which is the healthier rice, Brown rice or White rice?

Home Economics - Souvlaki

Souvlaki

Last Friday our Home Economics groups made Souvlaki wrap. Souvlaki is a wrap with thin strips of meat and tzatziki sauce.

The lesson we had a person absent, which meant we had to work extra hard to complete the dish. I also was not able to eat beef, so Mrs Hindson gave me a small chicken breast. The lesson went well, everyone knew their place and they were focused. They got their work done quickly and the class finished on time.

What did the group do well?
The group stayed focused and were productive. They understood the recipe and completed the instruction well. The group was committed to finishing on time, we achieved this.

What needs to be improved next time?
If we were to do this dish again I would add more vegetables and maybe more spices on the chicken, to give flavour. I would also warm the bread so it would stay warm while eating and maybe add more sauces.

Feedback?
I personally loved the dish, it had flavour and the chicken was soft. The vegetables were nice and had a fresh taste to it. My peers enjoyed their Souvlakis as well.

Next Steps:
1. Being able to wash dishes more quickly.
2. Keeping the benchtop clear.

Pad Thai - Home Economics

Pad Thai
Last Friday our home economics groups made pad thai. Pad Thai is a stir-fried noodle dish served with egg, cashew nuts and etc.

My group were assigned tasks of their own because this was a very time-consuming recipe. So everyone needed to be making parts of the dish. We did not have a full group of 4 because some students were absent, so we borrowed someone for the lesson. Getting into the lesson I personally think some people didn't know how to work on their own/read the recipe, so this caused interruptions. But in the end, everyone got their pad thai dish with time to spare.

What did the group do well?
The group stayed focused, even though at times people didn't know how to prepare stuff, they stayed on track and completed it. We communicated well and helped members within our group. The group had good time management and like I said before we had time to spare.

Whats needs to be improved next time?
If we were to do this dish again, I would not pour as much water in the pad thai when cooking it above the stove, because I had to wait quite a while before the water was able to evaporate. When making this dish again I would add more vegetables and maybe a fried egg.
Next time I would add just a bit more spices into it and chilli to give a nice flavour. Team work-wise I would say perhaps being able to read and carry out the instruction quickly.

Feedback?
I personally liked the dish but the noodles had a slimy texture to it, this may have been due to me pouring more water into the dish than usual. My friends had the same comment.

Next Steps:
1. Reading and carrying out the instructions quickly.
2. Taking a few more photos.

Pizza - Home Economics

🍕 Pizza 🍕

Last week, my home economics class made pizza. We were given tasks to do and we had to do them really quickly, sometimes we would mess up instructions but at the end, we got a nice tasting pizza. The pizza was really nice, the base wasn't too hard ( as some homemade pizzas can be ) and the toppings tasted really good. But we had a problem with the cheese it spilt onto the trays. Ms Hindson explained the problem, it was next time use a different type of cheese, preferably mozzarella.

What the group did well?
They stayed focus throughout the lesson and got things done quickly. We all contributed and no one was left by themselves.

What needs to be improved next time?
Next time I would choose mozzarella cheese ( as explained above ) and make the pizza dough a bit bigger.

Feedback?
I personally liked the pizza especially the base it was very soft. My group had a mutual response they loved the pizza as well.

Vegetarian Sushi - Home Economcis

Image result for vegetarian sushiVegetarian Sushi

Last Friday our group made vegetarian sushi. We were assigned tasks, and they were evenly spread out to every member. The sushi was really nice, the seaweed was wrapped up really tightly and there were a variety of vegetables. I personally did not like the wasabi.

What did we do well?
As a group, we stayed on task and followed the recipe. We managed our time well, and worked as a team, producing our delicious end result.

What needs to be improved next time?
If we were to make this dish again I would not add the wasabi, but add some soy sauce.

Feedback?
Feedback from the group was good, they liked the sushi but would have preferred some chicken.

Next Steps:
Arrive quickly to class and wash hands and gather things really fast. So we could get cooking.

Fish & Chips - Home Economics

Fish And Chips
Last Friday my group and I made fish and chips. Our group had many tasks, especially because one member was not able to cook with us. The tasks were spread out evenly and amongst every member. The fish was nice and soft and the bread crumbs were a great addition to the dish. I personally thought the chips were seasoned perfectly and had been cut perfectly, not to thin, no to thick.

What we did well?
Our group managed time very well and was able to finish before lunchtime. We worked as a team and got things done quickly and kept our benches clean.

What needs to be improved next time?
If we were to make this dish again we would use our time better and spread the lemon juice on fish before applying the bread crumbs. Maybe read the recipe better.

Feedback:
My group members loved the chips but thought the fish was too soft. I personally loved the dish and would definitely make it again in my own time.

Next Steps:
Our next steps would be too read the recipe thoroughly and finish making any dish with time to spare.

This recipe was used from: My Food Bag.

Jam Drops - Home Economics Week 3

Home Economics - Jam Drops

Image result for jam dropsLast Friday, our home economics groups made jam drops. Our group had tasks each which were evenly spread out throughout the students. Every student has a different skill level but I think our group has approximately the same skill level. What needs to be improved? I think our group needs to be quicker when reading the recipes. In saying that we need to be able to read the recipe thoroughly so we know what to do, without missing a step.

Feedback
The staff members were really positive and they loved the jammy biscuits. Our group loved them as well they were really soft, this was because we didn't let them sit for the crisp flavour and texture. But apart from that, the flavour of the jam was really nice. I personally loved them. It was not a smart idea to eat the biscuit straight after taking it out of the oven. =). The jam was very hot.

Next Steps
The groups next steps are to read the recipe quicker with a good understanding. This means not missing a step, or just skim reading. We also need to improve our accuracy in measuring.

My Food Bag - Home Economics

Image result for healthy dinner plate
Bibliography
Design Process
My profile target was teenagers/adolescents, my profile included nutrients, serving sizes and food examples. My recipe decision was based on what teenagers like to eat and their dislikes. It was also based on if it was easy to make and the skill level needed. My recipe was a chicken burger, and I knew that teenagers liked junk food, so I alternated the recipe to a healthier option.

Samosa Recipe

Ingredients

400g potatoes, peeled and diced
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 tsp Gregg's Ground Coriander
2 tsp Gregg's Whole Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Greggs Ground Turmeric
¼-½ red chilli, and finely chopped
Juice of 1 lime
1 cup Wattie’s Frozen Baby Peas
Handful fresh coriander leaves, chopped
3 sheets flaky pastry, thawed
1 egg, beaten

Yoghurt & Mint Dip

½ cup unsweetened natural yoghurt
A handful of fresh mint leaves, chopped
Juice of ½ lime

Method
  • Cook potatoes in boiling lightly salted water until tender. Drain and set aside.
  • Heat a dash of oil in a small saucepan. Add onion and garlic and cook over a medium to low heat until onion is soft. Add Gregg's Ground Coriander, Gregg's Whole Cumin Seeds and Gregg's Ground Turmeric, adding an extra dash of oil if the pan is dry.
  • Add chilli, lime juice and Wattie’s Frozen Baby Peas. Cover and cook for 5 minutes until the peas are tender, stirring regularly.
  • Mix cooked diced potato, pea mixture and chopped coriander together. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 200°C (fan bake).
  • Cut each pastry sheet into 4. Place a spoonful of filling in the middle of each square. Wet the edges of the pastry and fold over to make a triangle. Seal edges with a fork.
  • Place samosas on an oven tray lined with baking paper. Brush with a little beaten egg or milk. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is golden and filling hot. Serve with mint and yoghurt dip.

Yoghurt and Mint Dip:
  • Mix ingredients together. Serve in a bowl with the samosas.

Tips:
  • Reduce or omit the chilli if desired
  • You can replace the diced potato with diced kumara

Image result for healthy dinner plate model

As a group, we chose this recipe because it was looked pleasing and it was something that we have never made before.

The recipe fits into the dinner plate model because the pastry fills the grain section of the plate. The peas and potatoes fill the vegetable part of the dinner plate.  The yoghurt and mint dip fill the dairy section. I would say that the recipe itself is well balanced and can be altered to your taste.

Changes:
We made some changes to the recipe because the chilli was not hot if you put in 1/2 a chilli in the samosas. So instead we put the whole chilli in. In the previous recipe, it said to deseed the chilli, which makes it less spicy. So I recommend not deseeding the chilli.

Positives:
1. One of the positives was that the mixture for the samosas in the last practical was more flavourous than the previous practicals.

2. The pastry was cooked better and was flakier in the final practical and we knew when it was cooked.

What I Have Learnt This Semester

1. I have learnt how to plan better for occasions and what you think of and do when planning. Eg: Time it takes, money or is the food in season.

2.  How to manage time a bit better, even though it took our group quite long to pack up.

Yesterdays Food Model:
The purpose of this activity was to create a dinner plate for the food of our choice which was salmon with mash potatoes and kumara and some mixed vegetables.  The dinner model suggests we should have half of our plate filled with vegetables and quarter with starchy foods. The other quarter should be filled with meat or alternatives. The food we made relates to the dinner model because our group as followed the diagram.

Takeaways From The Term:

What is something I am taking away from this term?
I am taking away the importance of servings sizes. What I hope to apply to next term is knowledge about cooking and baking food. What I'm looking forward to next term is making my food bag.

Home Economics - 2019 - Year10

8th February

What we did?
Last week in Home Economics class we made Rice Patties with my group of four.

What we learnt?
During the class, I learnt how to cut spring onion the correct way. Since it was a new kitchen we learnt where the equipment was and how to turn on the right switches to the oven, stove, hood and microwave.

What do I need to work on?
As a group what we need to work on is time management and space-saving because the room is quite small.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------15th February
On the 15th of February, we made some hamburgers and the recipe is below with the following questions.

What Roles We Had Our Group:
In the group, we had several roles but some of my roles were: Washing the dishes, Wiping the dishes, Mixing all the ingredients together and keeping the table clean. These are some roles I had making the hamburger.

What Health & Safety issues did we encounter?
These are some of the issues we encountered: Someone cut their finger, the meat was not cooked properly and some organisation issues.
What improvements need to be made?
- Better Time Management
- Communication
- Better Organisation Skills
- Try To Finish On Time
- Try Being A Little Faster
