Home Economics - Reflection Questions.

What were your thoughts prior to eating?
I was not looking forward to it as much as hoped.

Did those thoughts change once you have sampled it?
Yes, because instead of following the recipe we added extra spices to make it more pleasing. The foods Miss Taylor chose for us didn't sound good at first but after we cooked it, it was really yummy. 

Why is it good to have one vegetarian dish per week in your diet?
It's because having one vegetarian dish per week cleans your food pallet and it healthy for you as you may know and helps lose weight.

Meat supplies us with protein and iron give an example of a vegetable that offers this as well?


Iron
1. Greens eg: Broccoli, Spinach & Silverbeet.
2. Nuts and Seeds.
3. Grains eg: Whole Wheat, Brown Rice.
4. Dried Fruit.

Protein
1. Greens eg: Kale, Spinach, Mushrooms, Brussel Sprouts, Artichokes.
2. Peas
3. Corn 
4. Asparagus.

How does this relate to carbohydrates?
Because glycemic index is focused on carbohydrates and how they increase in your blood system.

Measurement Conversions


  1. A recipe asks for 1 cup of milk, you can not find a measuring cup, you do have a tablespoon. How many tablespoons of milk would you need? 8
 
  1. A recipe asks for 12 tsp of ground pepper. You do not own any measuring spoons. However, you do have a cup. How could you measure the ground pepper? 1/4 cup
  2. You have found your favorite American beef recipe. The recipe asks for 5fl.oz of beef stock. Convert this to cups… 2/3 cups

  1. The American beef recipe asks you to bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (F), you are confused because your New Zealand oven only goes up to 250 degrees. Convert to degrees Celsius ( C )... 177

How To Measure ? / Home Economics

Measuring Spoons: is to measure powders such as salt, sugar, baking powder and baking soda. Scoop and then level with the back of the knife.

Measuring Jugs: Is to measure liquids, when measuring liquids make sure that the jug is on a flat surface and when reading the amount make sure you're eye is leveled with the jug.

Measuring Cups: Is to measure the dry ingredients, for example, when getting a cup of flour use the back of the knife to level the flour to its exact amount.

Savory Bread Cases: 1st Food Practical / Reflection

3 key things that I learned during my first food practical?

  • Where the equipment in the Hec room is.
  • To understand what cutting board is used for the practicals.
  • To remember the health and safety rules and follow them during class.

Bacteria.

What is bacteria? 
Living organism

What do bacteria need to survive?
They need food, oxygen, moisture, temperature time and neutral PH levels.

Give 3 examples of how we avoid spreading bacteria?
1. Wash your hands regularly. 
2. Leave your food only out for less than 2 hours.
3. If storing food use an airtight container.
What does the term cross-contamination mean and what's is its effect on you?
If one food has bacteria and you put it with another food you are contaminating it and creating more bacteria.
