Aim:
To find out if there is Simple Sugars, Complex Sugars and Protein in a cheeseburger.

Equipment:
Test Tube, Food Sample & Iodine Solution, Bunsen Burner, Test Tube Tongs, Benedicts Solution & A Sample Of Food, Sodium Hydroxide, Copper Sulfate.

Method:

Protein :
1. Place 2mL of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate.
3. Shake the test tube gently from side to side.

Simple Sugars :
1. Place about 2mL of the sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of Benedicts Solution.
2. Heat with a Bunsen until it changes color. Do not boil

Complex Sugars / Iodine :
1. Place about 2mL of the sample in the test tube.
2. Add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix.

Results:

Conclusion:

Complex Sugar - Iodine:
Bun: The bun changed from white to black which determined there were complex sugars present.
Meat: The meat barely changed color and it there was no sugar present because it rarely changed color.

Simple Sugar:
Unfortunately, no experiment was attempted for simple sugars.

Protein:
Bun: The bun remained the same color which indicated no sign of protein.
Meat Pattie: The meat pattie changed it's color to purple intimating signs of protein.

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains protein.

Equipment: Test type, sodium hydroxy (NaOH), copper sulfate (CuSO4) & food sample.

Method:

1. Place 2mL of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate.
3. Shake the test tube gently from side to side.

Results: The pictures above. Milk ( The photo on the right ) & Egg ( The photo on the left ).

Conclusion:

Egg & Milk: The color of the egg and milk went from white to light blue and then to purple designating that protein was present along with the molecules changing color due to molecules blending together. Additionally, both milk and eggs became purple to indicate a good source of protein.

Simple Sugars / Complex Sugars - Science

TESTING FOR SIMPLE SUGARS - THE BENEDICTS TEST:

Aim: To test a sample of food to determine whether it contains simple sugars.

Equipment: Bunsen Burner, Test Tube Tongs, Benedicts Solution & A Sample Of Food.

Method:
1. Place about 2mL of the sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of Benedicts Solution.
2.  Heat with a Bunsen until it changes color. Do not boil.

Results:
When we hovered the solution above the bunsen burner it gradually started changing to a  greenish yellow as we took it off the Bunsen through time it began turning orange.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, this experiment went well. The purpose of why it changed is that different molecules interacted with each other which is why it changed color. The color change indicates that there were sugars present.

TESTING FOR COMPLEX SUGARS  - THE IODINE TEST :

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains complex sugars.

Equipment: Test Tube, Food Sample & Iodine Solution.

Method:
1. Place about 2mL of the sample in the test tube.
2. Add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix.

Results:
The bread changed color where the iodine was dropped from white to black to purple. Then later on the areas where the iodine was not dropped, it began to become dark purple.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the bread changed color due to the change in molecules when a different molecule is added to another molecule, it changes color. The change of color means sugars were present.

Social Studies - Ta Moko

In Social Studies we have been learning about Ta Moko and its importance in the Maori Culture. This is an example of one I illustrated of a female Ta Moko. >

Explain What I Have Learnt About Ta Moko?

Mindfulness and Body Clues - Health

In Health, we are given questions to answer after we have finished a topic and this weeks topic was Mindfulness and Body Clues. - Extention Task

Lo: Communicate what I have learned and how I will apply this to the Business and Enterprise Kete.

What did I learn about?

I learned about the importance of being mindful and body clues ( how can you tell a person feeling by there body language). Being mindful taught me the value to connect with someone and to maintain that quality relationship in a positive way through, being non-judgemental, paying attention to them and to show genuine interest. Being aware of body clues taught me to assume if a person is angry or happy through there body language. It recognizes that if you were to speak to them, you do it in a way which was not hurtful or rude because you could read their body language.
Pic                                                                                   Evidence

Was there anything I felt difficult to understand? Why?
Nope.

When talking to a classmate how did you know what they were feeling?
When communicating with my classmate I noticed they were smiling a lot and had soft eyes and her posture was straight. I could tell they were feeling happy or excited because of there body language.

How can I apply my new knowledge to the Business kete? ( Mindfulness )
During the Business and Enterprise Kete, I will be able to be mindful of me and my peers. I will do this by showing interest in what they may be speaking about, noticing verbal and non-verbal messages, being non-judgemental & attempting to connect with them.

How can I apply my new knowledge to the Business and Enterprise Kete?
( Body Clues )
During the Business and Enterprise kete, I will be able to distinguish body clues and I will do this by using the information I am learning now to be able to understand peoples body clues and approach them in an appropriate manner.

How can you reduce conflict during the Business & Enterprise Kete? Give an Example?
During the Business and Enterprise Kete, I will be able to reduce conflict by paying attention to what the person is saying an don't interrupt,
Speak slowly, carefully and with a calm voice,
Wait until they have stopped speaking and then make a comment,
Respect their opinions,
Pay attention to your non - verbal communication - it should match your verbal communication.
Eg:  If I don't agree with my teammate's opinion, we agree to disagree.

Give an example of when you might need to keep calm during Business & Enterprise Kete?
During the Business and Enterprise Kete, I will be able to be CALM in several situations for example if my teammates get into an argument I will be able to resolve the situation and carry on. Also, I will be able to reduce conflict in an appropriate way without hurting anyone's feeling.

Wonder Work Part 8 - August

Explain August’s fears of going on school retreat/camp, were they justified?
Yes, they were justified, he is afraid to go because he has never been to a sleepover, August tried going to Christopher house and having a sleepover yet he missed his mother too much. He is partly excited and partly nervous.

Compare Eddie and Julian. How are they similar/ different. How do their interactions with August reveal their character?
Eddie is a bully who will say anything to August's face whereas, Julian will talk behind August back and tell people how defective he is but he won't confront it to him.

Explain how August's relationship with his classmates has changed since he first started going to Beecher Prep, give explains?
When he first came to Beecher Prep nobody talked to him everyone made up jokes to keep the distance from August. The only friends August had was Summer and Jack Will. After that everybody got used to nobody played games and everyone would interact with him. Soon I think they realized that the face doesn't matter it's the personality.

Describe how August has shown greatness during his year at Beecher Prep? Do you think he deserves the medal? Why?
August has shown greatness in numerous ways by not reacting to bullies and keeping his calm. He also showed empathy & kindness throughout the year which is why I think he deserves the medal, also to anyone August will make a good friend. He has shown commitment from the start to the end.

Compare the character of Auggie at the beginning of the book and in the final chapters. How has he changed and what has contributed to this change?
At the start of the book, August was a quiet and soft character and nobody understood him very well and thought his personality is just like his appearance. Soon August made friends and became more confident every time he went to school. His classmates got used him and acknowledged him as a person. August has matured as a person he has become used to primitive people around him and how to manage them.

Describe your favorite character in the story. Explain their impact on the story and why you picked them.
My favorite character is Summer, I like Summer because she is a kind and caring person and resembles like she will always have your back, and she has been nice to everyone including the bullies. Overall she is a good best friend for August & Jack.

This story explores the themes of; Friendship, Betrayal, Overcoming Challenges, Bullying and Family Relationships. Create a brainstorm web for each of these themes that shows what the story has told for each theme.

What do you think Auggie's future holds? What do you think will happen in his life?
I think his future will have mixed blessing, but reading the book I think he will be able to manage them.                                      AUGUST
