Wonder Questions Pg 11-40 - English

What was August's one wish that he wanted? If you could change one thing about your appearance what would it be? August knew he was normal, but all he wanted was to look normal, so people wouldn't stare or bully him as much. I would change my hair because my hair is frizzy and curly which I have an aversion to.

What do you think it means to be ordinary? What makes August extraordinary?
I think what it means to be ordinary is going to school, having friends and playing the video game's like every normal kid does. August is extraordinary, not a lot of people look like August. In addition, he is mostly smarter than the people who are actually going to school which makes him extraordinary since he has been homeschooled all his life.

How do people react when they see Auggie's face for the first time? How would you react?
They don't react, they stand there with there faces down and have no eye contact with August. If I was to see August for the first time, I would be shocked and perplexed at the same time and would be staring at the ground.

August's dad said, "So sending him off to middle school like a lamb to the slaughter...." What does this mean? Explain.
Lamb to the slaughter means sending something innocent to something really dangerous without them knowing. In the book wonder, this means sending Auggie to his doom,
since he's never been to an actual school before he doesn't know what it's like.

Would you send August to school if you were his mom or dad? Explain why or why not.
Yes, because I would want Auggie to experience all that's out there, make friends, have sleepovers & teach him how to deal with those mean and nasty people.

What white lie did August's mum tell? Why did she do it? Are white lies ok to tell?
Auggies mum told him, the woman who came and gave you the test was not for your IQ, it was for you to get into Beecher Prep. She did it because she knew that August was not going to do this, therefore she lied to him. I believe that telling white lies is acceptable if it's for there own good, but not to put them in a poor situation.

Auggie decided he liked Mrs Garcia ‐ when she wasn’t wearing her shiny smile. What is a 'shiny smile'?
A shiny smile means your smiling but your hiding something underneath. In this situation, Mrs Garcia was smiling on the outside, but on the inside, she might have been frightened or perplexed about Auggies face.

How does Auggie know the first time he meets Julian that he will be a bully? What are some of the ways that Julian bullies Auggie? How does Auggie respond? Julian says stuff in an arrogant and sarcastic way making Auggie feel bad but Jack and Charlotte don't see it. Quote " This is an eraser, you know what an eraser is right". He also asks unsuitable questions which hurts Auggie's feelings. He cut in front on Auggie making him stumble back a little. Auggie doesn't respond he mostly nods until he corrected Julian, for using the word supposadly Quote " The words supposedly, by the way, not supposadly".

NZ Music - Music

What I Like About This Song:

I like this song because of how Stan Walker, Ria Hall, Maisey Rika & Troy Kingi collaborate with each other and how their voices match in different ways. Likewise I also really appreciate how they are singing in Maori. Lastly, I admire how people come from different places in New Zealand and join the words Aotearoa, I really liked that. I also like that the tempo was not to fast and to conclude this song is very catchy.

Word Vomit - English

I look behind me and I see large trucks with military forces on them, I see cars and helicopters coming towards me. I stop and freeze for a minute, perplexed on what my next move is going to be. As the vehicles are coming towards me I see this man yell out " You must come with us or else". I start taking steps forward and soon I am running. I look behind me and...... Nothing is there. I blink a few times.

Particle Theory Of Matter - Conduction

Aim: To observe conduction along a metal rod.

Equipment: Metal Rod, Leg of the tripod., Bunsen Burner, Petroleum Jelly, 5- 10 Drawing Pins & a Stopwatch.

Method:
1. Set up and light bunsen burner.

2. Smear a small amount of petroleum jelly onto the head of each drawing pin.

3. Attach the drawing pin at even intervals along the leg of the tripod.

4. Position the leg of the tripod the Bunsen flame and start the
stopwatch.

5. Record the time it takes for each pin to drop in the table below.

Observations:
What we saw was approximately every 2 minutes the pin from the leg of the tripod would drop except for the last pin which took longer since it was at the end of the leg.

Explanation:
As the heat travels along the metal rod the Vaseline melts dropping the pin. It takes time for the for the rod to be heated all the way through meaning the pins will take time to drop.

Act 5 Scene 1 - Shakespeare - Merchant Of Venice.

Why do Lorenzo and Jessica remind each of the stories of classical lovers?
There love life has been similar to the one they are referring to.

What are Portia's feelings as she approaches the house?
She feels happy because she keeps commenting about happy things.

What is the first argument to break out?
Gratiano giving his ring.

How do Gratiano and Bassanio try to justify parting with the rings, are they successful?
They're saying it's all the judge would want and he helped save my best friend.

Was Bassanio right to give away the ring, give reasons for your thinking?
No, Because Bassanio had promised Portia that whatever happens, I would not give this ring away. Even if the judge (Portia) did something really good for your friend, Bassanio shouldn't have given the ring away.

How can the newly-weds threaten to sleep with the men who took their rings- and mean it?
Because Portia and Nerissa know they will be sleeping with themselves since they have the rings.

What effect do these arguments have on Antonio?
They make him feel guilty because he was the reason why the Bassanio and Gratiano gave there ring away.

Portia and Nerissa have the rings. What does this prove to Antonio, Gratiano and Bassanio?
It proves that Portia and Nerissa were the judge and the judge's clerk meaning they were set up.

How do Antonio, Lorenzo and Jessica benefit from news that Portia brings?
Antonio, because he gets half of shylocks money and contents.
Lorenzo & Jessica because in his will it will be written that everything I own will go to my daughter and her husband.

Maori Music For Modern Audiences

Behavior Of Matter - Contraction.

The Imploding Can
Aim: To observe contraction in gases.

Equipment: Aluminium Can, Scissor Tongs, Bunsen Burner, Heatproof Mat, Tripod, Gauze Mat & and open Container of Water.

Method
1. Set up the bunsen burner underneath a tripod and gauze mat.

2. Pour Approximately 50-60mL of water into your can.

3. Heat the can of water until you see steam is escaping from the top.
Carefully grip the can with scissor tongs. Ensure you have a firm hold of the can before lifting it off
the gauze mat.

4. Quickly, but carefully, invert the can as you plunge it into a container of water.

Observations
As the steam started to come out we put the can into the water and it crumbled up. At least that is what I would have wanted to happen. Doing this experiment my fellow classmate didn't put the can in the right position when he put the can into the container, it did not implode and I tipped all the water from the can onto our workbench. Eventually our third try worked out really well.

Explanation:
At first, we evaporated off the liquid. The particles in the cold water started to heat up and when we inverted the can into the cold water the particles cooled down and then it condensed back causing the can to implode.

Matariki - Music - 2 / 5 / 2018

Matariki:

What is Matariki?
Matariki is the name of a cluster of seven stars and
it signals the start of the new year.

Particle Theory Of Matter - Convection

Aim: To observe convection in a liquid.

Equipment: 200mL beaker, water, tweezers, a crystal of potassium permanganate, a drinking straw, Bunsen Burner, heat mat, tripod and gauze mat.

Method:
1. Set up a Bunsen Burner on a heatproof mat. Put the gauze mat on the tripod but leave it just to one side of the bunsen burner.

2. Fill a 200mL beaker with 150 mL cold water.

3. Place the beaker on top of the tripod and gauze mat and allow it to settle for a few minutes.

4. Carefully insert a drinking straw down one side of the beaker, ensuring the straw is touching the bottom of the beaker. Be careful as you don't want to disturb the water too much.

5. Using tweezers, drop a crystal potassium permanganate down the inside of the straw. Wait for the crystal to settle on the bottom of the beaker.

6. Very gently, so to not disturb the water, remove the straw.

7. Light the Bunsen and slide it under the tripod so that you are only heating the outside of the beaker where the crystal is. Observe.

Observations:
As we took away the straw from the water the potassium permanganate went to the surface of the water and then spread across the beaker.

Discussion:
When the potassium permanganate was released, as it was heated it raised up. Because when the particle is heated more it tends to move around more. This reduces the solidity of the substance making it rise up. In conclusion, this experiment was about observing convection which was interesting.

Observing Convection - Science

Aim: To observe convection in gas.

Equipment: Scissors, Paper Spiral Pattern, String, Source Of Heat
( Boiling Water or Radiator etc.).

Method:
1.) Cut out the spiral pattern carefully.
2.) Tie a length of cotton through the hole on the top of the spiral.
3.) Hold the spiral 30-40 cm above a heat source such as a radiator.
4.) observe

Results and Discussion:
Result: In this experiment, the spiral piece of paper turned as we placed the paper above the bunsen burner, why? Because the hot air is lighter than cold the hot air was able to rise making the spiral turn this is why they use hot air in hot air balloons.

Word Vomit - 3 / 5 / 2018

As I am paddling through the crystal clear water, I feel cold as this freezing wind blows across my face. I look at scenic views pass me. I notice these beautiful mountains, sitting next to each other. As I paddle through the water I lose myself in my thoughts. I paddle until the water starts to move and soon it gets faster and faster. I see my cabin I paddle like I have never paddled before. But I feel my canoe slowly going backwards. I start to yell but I realize that I am the only one or am I. I look behind I see this huge wave piling behind me. I stand up and jump into the water. This wave is getting bigger and bigger, I say to myself taking swimming lessons as a kid has really paid off. I reach the water bank and start to stand up. And then Whoosh.

ACT - 4 - Scene 1 / Act - 4 Scene - 2 - Shakespeare - Merchant Of Venice.

Act 4 Scene 1 :

What does the Duke believe Shylock intends to do?
The duke thinks shylock will take his pound of flesh
since shylock's reputation is not really good.

What does Shylock intend to do, and what reasons does he give for his decision?
Shylock intends to take his pound of flesh because

emotionally and physically Antonio has been abusive to him and they have signed a contract.

Why must the law be allowed to stand (why can’t the judge dismiss this case)
If he dismisses this case it will set the wrong example for others.

Shylock is very clear about the restrictions in the wording of the deed, how does Portia use these loopholes?
Shylock clearly says a pound of flesh nothing more nothing less meaning if Antonio bleeds or if he dies it is going against the law.

What penalties does Shylock now have to pay? Are they fair? Why/why not.
Shylock has to become Christian, he has to split his money with the state and Antonio and Shylock have to put in his will that everything I own goes to my daughter Jessica and her husband Lorenzo.

How do Lorenzo and Jessica gain by the result?
Because Shylock has put in his will everything I own goes to my daughter Jessica and her husband.

What reward has Portia claimed and why is this significant?
She claims the rings as the rewards by convincing her husband Bassanio to give her the ring that he swore to keep on his finger until he died.

Portia tells Shylock ‘The quality of mercy is not strained’. How does she try to persuade Shylock to show mercy, how much mercy is she willing to show him (line 345-362)
Because of Shylock refuses to show mercy Portia gives him the same treatment.

A4S1 L 70-80. Antonio gives us three short images of how useless any attempt by Bassanio to save his life will be
What are they?

- You may as well ask the ocean to get smaller.
- You may as well question the wolf why he ate the lamb.
- You may as well stop growing in the mountains and making noise when the wind blows.

ACT 4 SCENE 2:

What invitation does Portia refuse and why?
She says " I'll accept the ring but I won't come to dinner".

What does Nerissa plan to get, why do you think this
is important?
She plans to get the ring that Gratiano swore he will not take off until he dies.

Do you admire what Portia after these scene's or do you find her actions cruel? Use example's to support your thinking.
Yes and No. Yes because she saved her husbands best friend from dying and no because she kind of catfished her husband into giving her the ring she gave.

Observing Diffusion - Matter

Aim: To observe diffusion in a liquid.

Equipment: Petri dish, Water, Tweezers, A crystal of potassium permanganate.

Method
1. Half fill your petri dish on your workbench and allow the water to become settled.

2.Place the Petri dish on your workbench and allow the water to become settled.

3. Using the tweezers, place a single crystal of potassium permanganate in the centre of the petri dish.

6
4. Observe 4 minutes

5. Repeat the experiment using hot water.

Results and Discussion:
We had 4 minutes to see what the reaction was to the potassium permanganate in hot and cold water. These are the results :
Cold Water: The potassium permanganate spread very slowly across the petri dish.
Hot Water: The potassium permanganate spread faster across the petri dish in hot water than cold water.

Conclusion:
In this experiment, we were observing diffusion in liquid.  This experiment went really well. In conclusion, the potassium permanganate spread faster around the petri dish than in cold water.
