CHROMATOGRAPHY : Science

CHROMATOGRAPHY

Aim:
To separate the different pigments in inks using paper chromatography.

Equipment:
Ink pens, test tubes, a strip of filter paper, ice-block stick, tape, chromatography solution.

Method:
  1. Cut a piece of filter paper long enough to reach the bottom of your test tube.
  2. Rule a line in pencil 2cm from the bottom of the paper.
  3. Fill the test tube with 1cm of chromatography solution.
  4. Place a dot of ink above the ruled line.
  5. Tape paper to stick and place in solution.
  6. Wait and observe.
  7. Repeat with 2 other colors.
Results & Discussion :
After we put the filter paper in the test tube the paper absorbed the water and the colors spread along the paper. We had blue, purple and green. The color green spread along the paper and started turning into blue. The color purple spread long the paper and started turning into blue. The color blue spread long the paper but it did not turn into any other color.

Conclusion:
In this experiment, we saw that the primary which is blue didn't turn into another color because you can't mix any other color to make blue, that's why it's called a primary color. Green and purple both changed into blue because you need blue to make those to colors. In conclusion, this experiment turned out really good and the result was good as well.
