An insert shot is a shot that focuses on a particular detail ( mainly an object ) in a scene. It is used to communicate significant information to the audience about the film. There are three main aspects to an insert shot composition, colour and timing. The composition consists of shot size, shot angle and camera movement which help create a vibe and feel for the viewer. However, the colour in an insert shot helps attract attention to certain details in the film. Lastly, timing. The time spent on an insert shot determines the meaning of the insert shot.

How does colour in film affect people?

Certain colours give off certain emotions that the audience can feel. They affect people in a way to illicit emotions. 

What are the 3 factors in determining colour?

Hue, Saturation and Brightness.

Hue is the colour chosen.

Saturation is the intensity of the colour.

Brightness is how light or dark the colour is. 

Why is the hue in " The Matrix " mostly green?

The movie is taken inside of a digital matrix and green is a common colour in coding.

Why do some films desaturate?

To take us back in time during black and white colours in film, photos, etc. As well as to give off a cold, miserable, sombre vibe. 

What can brightness and a lack of brightness show in film?

Brightness in a film can express a happier, cheerful feeling amongst the audience where as the lack of brightness shows the audience the scene is supposed to be dramatic, sad and glum.

What is a POV shot?

A POV shot is a shot where it shows what the character is looking at in their perspective. The shot puts the audience in the characters shoes. 

What is a "point of thought" shot?

A point of thought shot gives an idea of what the character is thinking along with emotions and other aspects.  

Why are they important?
So the audience can understand the emotions and thoughts from the character's perspective and allows them to understand the characters, deeply.

What is the tone in a film?

Tone simply means the brightness. The tone determines how the audience should be feeling and the vibe that is given off.

What are the 3 elements of tone?

Tone can be categorised into three:

- Lighting 

- Exposure

- Art Direction

How and why does Coppola use tone in the classic film of " The Godfather" 

He uses it to express the feelings and vibes that should be given off. For example, the wedding happening outside has a lighter tone and people are dressed in lighter colours. In stark contrast, the conversation happening inside involves darker lighting and darker art direction. This is done to express the emotions the audience should be feeling. During the wedding, everyone is happy and joyful whereas during the conversation inside the characters give off a sombre vibe.

What is an establishing shot?

Predominantly a long shot which is taken to establish a scene of a film. 

Why is it used?

It is mainly used at the start of a film to set the setting of the film but can be used throughout the movie to change from one setting to another. It shows the relationship between the character and their location. 

Why are establishing shots usually the most expensive?

This is usually the most expensive shot because the audience is able to see everything.

The effect of the over-the-shoulder shot shows connection between characters in a film. In stark contrast, a single shot will disconnect your characters.  In this scene which was given to us, the director changes the shot from an over-the-shoulder to a single shot which shows that the characters are on a different page and therefore show a disconnection. Theresa is then brought to a close-up shot that completely isolates her.

What is contrasted In Spike Jonze's ad?

In Spike Jonze's ad involving the homepod, he contrasts the lighting, tone, colour, production design and blocking in the ad. 

Why did he contrast these things?

At the start of the ad, it is dark with minimal lighting and raining giving a sombre and depressing vibe to the audience. The character is confined and the camera angles suggest she is cramped and weak. Actors and including herself are dressed in dull colours. However, as she arrives home and communicates with the homepod the lighting brightens and she reveals a white shirt. The tone changes to give off a happy vibe. Camera angles change to display she is now free to move and enjoy herself. 

In short, he contrasted lighting, blocking, colour, tone and production design to show that a homepod can turn depressing day to a jovial one.
