This is a short piece of writing that I have written while doing an English activity. It's about the bystander effect. If you do not know what the bystander effect is have a read:

Have you heard of the bystander effect? Probably not. This is when humans -like us- are given the opportunity to help somebody but instead, we sit there still relying on somebody else.

Studies show that when there are more people in the room we are less likely to help somebody but as the number of people decreases the time we take to help somebody also decreases. Why is that?

We as humans show empathy, so why is it when comes to assisting others we back down? There are numerous reasons. One reason might include you are too anxious or afraid to stand up in front of everyone and assist the victim. Eventually, somebody will offer to help, but after a long time.

Others include using the phrase “somebody else could do it”. This means relying upon someone else in the room when in fact they are doing the exact same thing.

So have a think, have you ever been a bystander?
