Act 3 Scene 2 - Merchant Of Venice - Shakespeare.

Act 3 Scene 2
Why does Portia want Bassanio to delay his choice?
Because Portia does not want Bassanio to choose the wrong casket and not marry Portia.

What makes Bassanio choose lead over the silver and gold caskets?
Find the quotes in the text to support your thinking.
Because Bassanio thinks every other guy who has come must have chosen gold to represent Portia and gold is decieving, and he didn't choose silver either because silver is to common and Bassanio chose lead because it's humble.

Quote:
The seeming truth which cunning times put on
To entrap the wisest. Therefore then, thou gaudy gold,
Hard food for Midas, I will none of thee.
Nor none of thee, thou pale and common drudge
'Tween man and man. But thou, thou meager lead,
Which rather threaten’st than dost promise aught,
Thy paleness moves me more than eloquence,
And here choose I. Joy be the consequence!

What does Portia’s speech A3S2 L166-174 reveal about the expected roles of a woman in marriage?
Portia is saying that if a am I woman that does not mean that I am stupid.

What did Gratiano’s and Nerissa’s wish to marry depend on?
Portia.

How does Portia know that the letter contains bad news?
She saw Bassanio's face fall and turn pale.

What help does Portia offer straightaway?
x3 the original amount.

Why do we not expect this help to be successful?
The law won't allow it because it is past the due date.

Do you think Portia would still be in love with Bassanio if she knew he had lied about his wealth?
Yes because she fell in love with him before he chose a casket.

Word Vomit

In the forest far away from town, there lived a scientist in an old caravan which was dented and hardly even working. She studied bears and how they live in the wild. But this wasn’t your normal brown bear it was black and white spotted bear, known for its skin and how rare it was. This bear used to live in a locked up den in the middle of nowhere. He would not get fed by his owner and would always leave the bear hungry.

CHROMATOGRAPHY : Science

CHROMATOGRAPHY

Aim:
To separate the different pigments in inks using paper chromatography.

Equipment:
Ink pens, test tubes, a strip of filter paper, ice-block stick, tape, chromatography solution.

Method:
  1. Cut a piece of filter paper long enough to reach the bottom of your test tube.
  2. Rule a line in pencil 2cm from the bottom of the paper.
  3. Fill the test tube with 1cm of chromatography solution.
  4. Place a dot of ink above the ruled line.
  5. Tape paper to stick and place in solution.
  6. Wait and observe.
  7. Repeat with 2 other colors.
Results & Discussion :
After we put the filter paper in the test tube the paper absorbed the water and the colors spread along the paper. We had blue, purple and green. The color green spread along the paper and started turning into blue. The color purple spread long the paper and started turning into blue. The color blue spread long the paper but it did not turn into any other color.

Conclusion:
In this experiment, we saw that the primary which is blue didn't turn into another color because you can't mix any other color to make blue, that's why it's called a primary color. Green and purple both changed into blue because you need blue to make those to colors. In conclusion, this experiment turned out really good and the result was good as well.

Distillation

Aim: To separate a solute from a solvent in a solution using distillation.

Equipment: A solution of cola, test tube, heatproof mat, a delivery tube and bung, Bunsen burner, tripod, gauze mat, retort stand, boss head clamp & boiling tube.

Method:
1. Set up the equipment
as shown in the diagram.
2. Add approximately 50ml of cola to your test tube.
3. Light your bunsen burner. Open air hole gently pushes the Bunsen burner under the tripod.
4. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated. Turn off your bunsen burner.

Results & Discussion:
First, we set everything up as it said on the scipad and then we lit the bunsen burner. Then we poured the coke, we used diet coke. After that, we moved the bunsen burner in and out. Next, we saw the little bubbles rising from the tube into the test tube. After that, we saw multiple bubbles rising. By accident, a little coke went into the test tube and so our clear bubble water went to a light cream color.

Conclusion:
To conclusion, this experiment was to extract the water from the coke and see what it comes to. Our experiment worked out really well except for the part when a tiny amount of coke went into the test tube changing the color.

What is the purpose of the rhymes in the caskets?

To chose the right casket and know what you deserve.

Why does the Prince of Aragon discard the golden caskets? What does his interpretation of the inscription tell us about his character?

He thinks that every other man that has come to meet him will choose that casket because Portia deserves to be in the golden casket.

What is Portia’s reaction to Bassanio’s arrival?
Doesn't care as much.

Science Experiment - Saturation.

Aim:
To form a crystal from a supersaturated solution.

Equipment:
Test Tubes, Bunsen Burner, Heat Mat & Test Tube Tongs.

Method:
  1. Gently heat the test tube until it becomes liquid.
  2. Place in test tube rack for 30 minutes.
  3. Wait for the magic ingredient.

Results & Discussion:
When we started boiling the crystal on top of the bunsen burner it slowly turned into a liquid. Until we left it to long on the bunsen burner and it exploded, a drop came on my hand and it turned into a solid again. Then we waited for 10 minutes for it to cool down. After waiting we added a tiny amount of the powder and slowly it went back to the solid we saw at first.
Image result for chemistry
Conclusion:
In conclusion, we are turning solids into liquids and then back to a solid. This experiment explains a lot about heat packs and ice packs and how they form by just breaking them in half.

Concentration - Science Experiment.

Aim: To make a dilution series to investigate the concentration

Equipment: A potassium permanganate crystal, six large test tubes, tweezers, a plastic transfer pipette, a test tube rack, 10,l measuring cylinder.

Method
1. Place the six test tubes in a test tube rack. Label the rack with numbers 1-6.
2. Using the measuring cylinder, fill test tube 1 with 10 ML of water. Fill the remaining test tubes with 5 ML of water.
3. Using your tweezers, add a single crystal of potassium permanganate to test tube 1.
4. gently shake the test tube until the Crystal has dissolved.
5.Using the transfer pipette. carefully remove exact,y 4 ML from test tube 1 and pour it into test tube 2.
6. Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly to ensure that no purple solution remains.
7. gently shake test tube 2 and repeat the transfer process, transferring exactly 5 ml of solution from test tube 2 to test tube 3.
8. Rinse the pipette again and repeat the transfer process for test tubes 4, 5 and 6.

Results and Discussion :
When we poured the Potassium Permanganate it turned dark purple. As we transferred the potassium along the six test tubes the concentration of the potassium got lighter until the last test tube was a really light pink and purple color. We mixed all the test tube and it came to this color -------------------------------------------------------------->

Conclusion:
This exercise involved mixing a solute with a solvent to get a solution and to see if the solute was insoluble or soluble. The solute was soluble meaning the crystal dissolved in water.
In conclusion, the mixing of dark colors with water get lighter as you add more water in.

Investigating Solubility .

Aim:
To investigate the solubility of baking soda, table salt, and copper oxide to see which is the most soluble.

Equipment:
100mL beaker, 100mL measuring cylinder, salt, baking soda, copper oxide, stirring rod, spatula.

Method:
    Image result for beaker
  1. Fill a beaker with water
  2. Add a spatula full of baking soda.
  3. Stir the solution until it dissolves.
  4. Repeat step 2 and 3 until no more will dissolve.
  5. Record how many spatula fulls were added.
  6. Repeat the experiment with salt and copper oxide.
Results & Discussion:
These are my results for the experiment.
Salt: 2
Copper oxide : 0
Baking Soda: 4
I found out that no matter how much you mix copper oxide in water it will never dissolve. It takes salt 2 spatula's to dissolve and for baking soda, it takes 4.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, copper oxide is impossible to dissolve in water, baking soda and salt are possible. The aim was to see which solid was the most soluble. Baking soda and salt were but the quickest was salt.
